The Next Right Thing.

I just finished reading True Blue Friend and found it to be a honest and sincere account of the road to recovery. Having grown up in the same town as the author (but having moved out almost 40 years ago) I enjoyed the references to many of the streets and places when I was growing up. His honest feelings came through and his willingness to help others is truly what the AA fellowship is all about. I applaud Roy DeMauro for his taking the time to write his feelings and thoughts down in book format to share and help others. A great inspiration to "do the next right thing."

Raw, Real, Remarkable!

An unbelievable story of weakness turned into incredible strength. 24 pages into the book, "Royce" could've died numerous times. God truly has a plan for him to help other addicts in need. Once you get past the raw nature of the writing, you see an incredible individual with an incredible story to tell. I hope this book enables Roy Demauro to add to the many he has saved.

He writes from his heart and shared his true life experiences, good and bad one.
I would recommend this book for just about anyone. Preteens and Teens should definitely read this. Maybe if they read this they will take the better road in life!!

Clearly an homage to the man to whom “virtually every academically affiliated surgeon can trace his or her teachers,” teaching surgeon Imber’s effort is more than a biography. It is a scholarly reconstruction, complete with historical perspective, of the life of a man who managed to revolutionize surgical practices and, indeed, the entire field of surgery, while battling the enduring and debilitating consequences of self-inflicted medical experimentation. To make surgery more efficient for surgeons, safer, and freer of pain for patients, Halsted began to explore various methods of anesthesia, including the then recently discovered drug, cocaine. He became addicted. Failure to kick that addiction played havoc with his professional life and ultimately forced him to turn optimistically to heroin, generally thought at the time to be an effective treatment. The result was lifelong heroin dependence, despite which he was eventually able to not only function but also continue a brilliant career. About the Author
Dr. Gerald Imber is a well known plastic surgeon and authority on cosmetic surgery, and directs a private clinic in Manhattan. An early proponent of prevention and minimally invasive procedures, he has devised many popular anti-aging techniques, and is attending surgeon at New York Presbyterian Hospital and assistant clinical professor of surgery at Weill-Cornell School of Medicine.

Dr. Imber has published many scientific papers and is a regular lecturer at professional meetings. He is also the author of a number of “beauty books” and has written on many subjects for varied publications such as Departures, and The Wall Street Journal, and appears regularly on network television.

A heroic historical page-turner

Dr. Gerald Imber will change your views of what it means to be a doctor and a patient, to be sick and to be well. While tracing the convoluted evolution of modern surgery, Imber also chronicles the prodigious, twisted career of the greatest surgeon in American history. As he modernized medicine - introducing such life-sparing novelties as anesthesia, scrubsuits, handwashing, sterlized instruments, even while the medical establishment strenuously resisted his innovations -- Halsted himself descended into a dark, secretive abyss of cocaine abuse and closeted homosexuality. Yet Halsted's techniques and his teaching were so unimpeachably sound, they remain the model for practicing and teaching surgery today. Halsted's story is written with such clarity, it will appeal universally - along the way, Imber's tale encompasses, among other matters, 19th-century American and European history, and some commendably high and lamentably low examples of the human condition. It is a wonder Halsted never had a biography before; we should be very grateful that Dr. Gerald Imber took on this daunting task. His impressive scholarship never gets in the way of good story telling. The charm, humor, and authority of the author's voice shines warmly throughout the sprawling narrative.

Strangely fascinating

By far the best biography I have read. I did not have to skip over any boring parts or risk falling asleep. It was strange to realize that not only did people not always use sterile practices but that within the last 100 years people did not use sterile practices. Dr Halsted snd his peers were the creators of modern medicine as we still know it, and their story is a fascinating one.

Fascinating look into how modern surgery developed

"Genius on the Edge" is an interesting book describing the medical developments (especially in surgery) during the period of about 1846 to 1922. The first third of the book mainly focused on what surgery was like before this period, on the developments that occurred from 1846 to 1889, and how they affected Halsted's medical training and prompted his surgical innovations. The rest of the book was more a series of short biographies of men who worked with Halsted and the developments they (and he) brought to the practice of surgery from 1889-1922. It also covered Halsted's marriage and how he lived.

The author didn't assume that the reader was familiar with medical terms and so concisely worked that information in as was needed to understand the innovations. He did an excellent job of making the topic fascinating and easy to understand. I found the book a quick read despite the amount of information packed into it. I also liked how the author wove the general technological changes and social setting into the story so we could see how society effected the advances and how Halsted and the others influenced society in turn. While the book mostly focused on American surgery (especially that done at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine), the author also brought up related advances over in Europe.

There were only a couple of brief descriptions of actual surgery, so most of the book probably wouldn't bother those who get queasy by descriptions of operations.

Some of the topics covered were: the introduction of general anesthetics, heat sterilization, and antiseptics to make surgery safer. How medical training had been done and how it changed (both in medical school and post-graduate) under the influence of Halsted and his friends at Johns Hopkins. The creation of out-patient clinics, the beginnings of bacteriology and the germ theory, the change from quick and brutal surgery to gentle, careful handing during surgery, the introduction of surgical gloves, of using cocaine as a local anesthetic, emergency blood transfusion, surgery of the brain, and much more.

Overall, I'd highly recommend this well-written and interesting book to those interested in how medicine (especially surgery) has developed into what we take for granted today.

‘Observing price action is the simplest way to trade.’

Zach Raymond may not leave biographical data to support his background, but just read his books – ONE HOUR TRADING, INVESTING FOR BEGINNERS, SALES, STOCK TRADING – and he grabs our attention despite the brevity of his books.

In this brief but concise book ONE HOUR TRADING Zach discusses Forex trading, and for those unfamiliar with the term, it stands for ‘trading foreign exchange, and he mentions right away the key to understanding and benefitting form this book is to understand ‘price action’ – ‘the most powerful, and also the easiest way to trade the market successfully. It is a style of technical analysis however it uses candles on a chart which represents data. This data shows what the market has been doing for a specific time range. For example if it is a weekly candle then it shows what the market did for that week. All economic data and worldwide news that effect price in any way will be reflected on the price chart so it eliminates almost any use of following the news. Whilst economic data and other global news events are the catalysts for price movement in a market, we don’t need to analyze them to trade the market successfully. The reason is pretty simple, all economic data and world news that causes price movement within a market is reflected via Price Action on a price chart. The main reason that separates price action trading from all other trading strategies is that it uses “clean” charts also known as “naked” charts. There are no indicators or anything confusing on your chart, the only thing that is there is raw price displayed as candles. This makes trading simpler and easier.’

I don't suggest this book.

Slow read, doesn't really seem to offer any helpful advice. I quit trying to ready it. Been having better results with Mindfullness Meditation techniques even though I'm not practicing it very well. If you just suck at your job or have a bad boss then maybe this book would give you the motivation to quit and move on to a better fit.

This book helped me quite a bit!. I just finished reading it and the first thing I am going to do is read it again! This time I am going to take better notes. There were a couple of typographical errors, but it was not big deal because the content was spot on! I don't buy into every thing she said, but there were many practical tools that I could start using immediately to make my situation better. Being a manager, I especially liked the TASC Plus technique she teaches. When I first started reading the book, I felt validated by the way she described burn out. Very motivating and useful information.

There are few books on burnout that deal with practical strategies. Many times, we know - at least in part - why we feel burnout. The problem is moving forward, and theoretical analyses of organization structure, etc. are often not that helpful. This book provides detailed strategies for recognizing the factors that lead to burnout and strategies for dealing with burnout. For example, the book indicates that frequent "negative wins" will lead to burnout. We get a "negative win" when we do something in order to avoid something negative. A kid cleaning her room to avoid being yelled at by a parent is an example of a situation with a negative win. An adult cleaning the living room because he wants to relax in a comfortable environment is an example of a situation with a positive win. Potter suggests that we develop ways of providing our own positive wins when we do not get them naturally from the situation. I find these insights valuable in developing my own recognition of situations that can lead me to burnout. I have implemented some of the strategies, and they have helped quite a bit. This is not the perfect book on this subject, but it is a good and useful book - most importantly, it actually does help. I'm very happy that I purchased it.
