Important book on Wittgenstein and religion.

Brian Clack is a teacher at St Clare's College in Oxford in England. His book is important for anyone who wants to learn more about Wittgenstein and religion, and understand anti-realism in the philosophy of religion.
Brian Clack obviously has a pretty good grasp on Wittgenstein. He starts his book with giving an introdcution to Wittgenstein's philosophy in general. Then he continues with touching issues that more explicitly relate to religion and the philosophy of religion. He explains Wittenstein's ideas in Culture and Value and Remarks on Frazer's Golden Bough. Thess texts by Wittgenstein himself may be somewhat difficult to understand, but Clack introduces the material and may show you how this relates to other parts of Wittgenstein's philosophy. The book also covers such topics as Wittgensteinian views on miracles and prayer, immortality and Wittgenstein's relation to radical theologians like Don Cupitt.
I give the book four stars because Brian Clack has dared to write a clear and simple philosophical text, while still being able to communicate the important points in Wittgensteinian philosophy of religion. This is a very well-written book. The reason why I don't give it five, is that I think it should have contained a little more critical discussion. Some of the points Clack make should have been challenged a little or at least discussed more critically, for instance that religious language is not descriptive, that certain religious propositions are sbsurd or irrational if interpretated as descriptions of potential facts and Clack's general non-cognitivist attitude. It would have been interesting if Clack had mentioned Alston, Plantinga and Swinburne and some classical Christian thinkers a bit more and been willing to defend his own views.
However, this is an introduction and Clack has chosen an approach and in a sense I respect that. The most important thing about this book is that it is to-the-point, and raises a lot of questions. It is an excellent starting point for further thinking, and grosso modo Clack has written a very interesting book.

Grendel is a beautiful and heartbreaking modern retelling of the Beowulf epic from the point of view of the monster, Grendel, the villain of the 8th-century Anglo-Saxon epic. This book benefits from both of Gardner's careers: in addition to his work as a novelist, Gardner was a noted professor of medieval literature and a scholar of ancient languages.

George Guidall's crusty but spirited narration is perfectly suited for the monster Grendel. Gardner's 1971 classic takes the Anglo Saxon Beowulf epic and uses varying translations of the poem and other writings from the period to tell the story from the poor monster's viewpoint. Most first-person narratives translate well to the audio format, and Grendel especially enchants, casting a spell not unlike a grown-up "Lord of the Rings." The monster observes humans from a revealing and telling vantage. Just like a child in the schoolyard, Grendel picks up certain curse words and takes joy in repeating them. This has resulted in Gardner's book being challenged at the many schools where it is rightfully part of the curriculum. Guidall's voice is familiar enough for a still-fresh tale. Of all the novels on my bookshelf, John Gardner's Grendel is the most dog-eared, highlighted, and thorougly enjoyed book of the lot. After reading Beowulf for a high school british literature class, we read Grendel and I fell in love. Haunting, beautiful, captivating and at all times mysterious, Grendel is able to capture the essence of our collective struggle to understand - to understand our reason, purpose, and meaning (if we indeed have any). Life is Grendel's great burden and he draws the reader into his world of confusion and hypocracy. At times utterly heartbreaking, at others sublimely beautiful, Grendel should be read over and over and over again.

I recently read Grendel for a high school course and found myself shocked from the beginning at the quality. The normally distasteful nature of reading assignments aside, Grendel was a stunning book. Though Grendel is always physically described as a monster, I know people whose mental state is very nearly the same as his. Reading the pain of such a despicable creature that hits so close to home was stomach-wrenching and breathtaking-- unlike the epic poem, Beowulf, Grendel made it difficult not to see the characters as real. Despite Grendel's purportedly evil and inhuman nature, I couldn't help but see him as someone I knew, feeling what he went through. By the end of the book I loved and hated him, and was given a good bit to think about with the Danes and Geats, and especially the dragon. A definite must-read for would-be philosophers (no, not that annoying high talk you may have been forced to read while "studying philosophy") and anyone intrigued by the darker side of human nature.

What if you could see into the mind of Grendel, the terrifying creature of the night from Beowulf? Well, with this book by John Gardner, you can. Brutal at times, irreverent at others, and very cynical at others, Grendel wanders around for many years watching the development of the various human tribes and the emergence of Hrothgar as a sort of king among them. He spends twelve years in a unique relationship with the king, trying first to make friends with the Danes (he is attacked) and later making raids and killing the most drunken of Hrothgar�s thanes. The notorious coward Unferth (the one who later insults Beowulf) is also developed here--Grendel has such contempt and pity for Unferth that he will not kill him (thus giving him a hero�s death) despite Unferth�s repeated attempts to fight him.

In the poem Beowulf, Grendel is a very flat character. He is, in fact, the epitome of evil, unfeeling and cruel. He comes, he kills and eats people, he leaves. Then he comes back. This book gives Grendel a personality. He knows he is a member of the fallen (Cain�s) race, and accepts that fact. He is lonely, and cannot even get companionship from his mother, who has long ceased to communicate. In fact, his only real �friends� are the Danes he kills. Still, he knows he is dependent on Hrothgar�s survival. �If I murdered the last of the Scyldings,� he muses, �what would I live for?�

This book gives excellent insight into the character of Grendel, and will definitely change the way you look at the poem Beowulf. Gardner�s Grendel is a creature who determines to kill Beowulf for the honor of Hrothgar, so that his thanes will not have been outdone by a newcomer. I highly recommend this short work for anyone interested in the great old English epic.

This is the best Witchcraft encyclopedia I've ever read or had. What a blessing! Quite a myriad of topics: a grand discussion of botanicals, understanding fairy tales, Witchcraft's uneasy life past and present, talk of boon and bane in Witchcraft, an inquiry into Women's Mysteries. I could go on; that's a tiny picture; there's much much more. There's a 21 page index, 9 page bibliography, and enough to entrance your interest forever. I recommend this book for today's serious student.

Don't waste your money on this book or any "SEO" books written by Sean Odom, including those written under "pseudonyms", including Mike Monahan, Jason McCormick and Sean M. Farrell. These are all one and the same person which he uses to promote his multitude of SEO related businesses, giving the appearance not only of having multiple "SEO Experts" working for his companies but also of creating the illusion that his various companies are not actually related. Thus he can give the appearance of objectivity when, as one person/author, he "recommends" another of his business to readers/customers (which is basically any business or company or service he recommends aside from the obvious exceptions like Google and Microsoft). Extremely good information but full of grammatical errors and typos.

Sean is clearly an expert and I recommend this book even if you don't plan to optimise your site because it will show you what is required to raise your site's visitor numbers. Armed with the information, you can decide whether it's necessary and assess how many man-hours it might take. That's a useful piece of information if you need to negotiate a price for the work.

Sean does, however, assume a certain amount of knowledge on the reader's part. For example, if you've never heard of a "robots.txt" file, you might want to read a more basic manual first.

On the downside, the book has not been copy-edited. Considering that Sean insists that you should check your website for errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation, it's disappointing to find that this book is full of such errors. Indeed, it lowers Sean's credibility and would make me think twice about letting him type anything on any of my sites. Basic mistakes such as the use of "your" instead of "you're" are especially worrying but there are also words missing, words duplicated and words misspelt - the combination of errors making some paragraphs difficult to understand. Frankly, this book is a "beta version" and should never have been released as it is. Please, Sean, get it fixed.

Good for basic concepts. Many mistakes, incorrect answers, and poor explanations. Be prepared to be confused and frustrated!

This is a decent text for introduction to anesthesia concepts. As a CA-1, it's one of the only useful question resources for anesthesia basic knowledge. HOWEVER, there are MANY MANY errors in the books which makes it VERY frustrating when doing the questions. The errors aren't necessarily in the content, but MANY times the answers do NOT address the original question. It just discusses a topic related to the question which leaves you wondering what the actual explanation is. Some answers say C but the explanation describes A as the correct answer.

For instance, question 341 asks for the greatest to least anesthetic requirements between adults, neonates, and infants. The answer explains that sevo is different from all other anesthetics in this regard, and then goes on to talk about what the answer would be if it were asking about sevo in specific. But the correct answer they give IS for sevo and not for most volatile anesthetics as the question intended. See the confusion? Just one of MANY types of frustrating errors in this book.

For a question book that's on its FIFTH edition, there are a LOT of overlooked errors, outdated information, and confusing answers. I wish there were a way to contact them to inform them, but I'm sure many already have and little has been changed. Goes to show that they re-release the same text with a new edition title to make a fresh new buck.

Overall, most of the question and answers are useful for reviewing basic anesthesia concepts for CA-1's and 2's. But beware the frustration and confusion you'll encounter when using this text.

Outstanding Anesthesiology Textbook in the Question-and-Answer Format

"Anesthesia: A Comprehensive Review, Fifth Edition" is a superb textbook, and it is widely considered to be the best of the Anesthesiology textbooks written in the question-and-answer format. It provides an excellent review of the fundamental principles of the specialty of Anesthesiology, as well as thorough coverage of the subspecialty areas of Anesthesiology practice. Used in conjunction with one of the comprehensive textbooks of Anesthesiology, this very useful question-and-answer manual serves to permanently imprint the key concepts that are an essential component of the knowledge base of every resident. It truly functions as the ideal complement to a comprehensive textbook of Anesthesiology, when preparing for the ABA written board examination. "Anesthesia: A Comprehensive Review, Fifth Edition" is an exceedingly useful educational resource for Anesthesiology residents, and I give it my highest recommendation.

Beware, Nearly IDENTICAL to Prior Edition (4th edition)!!

A good review book. Useful for anesthesia residents preparing for intraining exam and board certification. Sadly, I paid $80 for the 4th edition of the same book, and to my disappointment about 80-90% of the questions are the SAME WORD FOR WORD from the 4th edition. Not worth the upgrade. I was expecting more
